Comparative Essay Toms Party V.S. Gatsbys Party
Joanne Kwan April 24, 2012 Comparative Essay: Tomââ¬â¢s Party v.s. Gatsbyââ¬â¢s Party The comparison between the two parties of Tom and Gatsby portrays the main difference between a Manhattan party and a West Egg (New money) party. F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author, uses this comparison to portray the 1920ââ¬â¢s as an era of corrupted social and moral values. Although the parties at both Tom and Gatsbyââ¬â¢s are drenched in alcohol, the motivation behind the parties is different. Tomââ¬â¢s main goal in throwing a party at Manhattan was to please Myrtle. The party was situated in Manhattan because Tom couldnââ¬â¢t risk affecting his social status by openly associating with his mistress, Myrtle, while his wife Daisy was resided in East Egg. Despite Tomââ¬â¢sâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The description above illustrates an image of a small sized room, filled with expensive, over-sized materials that are too big for the small room they have. This portrayal informs us of how Tom is trying to bring the riches of East Egg into Manhattan to allow Myrtle to h ave feel as if she is a part of the wealthy society and parties. In contrast, Gatsbyââ¬â¢s party was hosted at his own house, a mansion, filled with extravagant furniture, bars, gardens, orchestra, and workers. The guests all wore evening gowns charged with various colors and spirit. As opposed to Tom, Gatsby didnââ¬â¢t have to go to Manhattan to throw a party since he had nothing to hide. Instead, he wanted to make known of his lavish parties. He wanted people to talk about him as the mysterious wealthy man. He wished to be the main gossip of the town, hoping that one day it will grasp Daisyââ¬â¢s undivided attention and love. Overall, F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays the 1920s as an era of corrupted social and moral values. Fitzgerald supported its corruptness with never-ending skepticism, greed, and shallow pursuit of pleasure that was embedded into the atmosphere. Tom, the Old money, never had to work for his wealth. As a result, he is unable to be fully satisfied. Tom is u nconsciously required to be entertained. A Day at UNT free essay sample
Everyone rushed to the bus as Griffith started to say ââ¬Å"letââ¬â¢s go guys!â⬠Our destination, University of North Texas. As we were heading to UNT, I did not know what to expect, but the thing I knew for sure was that I was excited. When we got there, the building was a huge maze. As we were walking through the hallway, I saw a distinct, but awesome helicopter that looked like it was taken out of a video game. It had four bright orange propellers. I asked the designer, ââ¬Å"Does it work?â⬠He replied with a huge smile on his face, ââ¬Å"Yes, it does.â⬠He said it in an accent that I did not recognize, so since I didnââ¬â¢t understand him, I said bye and just went along. Walking down the line of inventions, I saw things from a skateboard that was made out of fiberglass, to one of the most amazing things that I had ever seen. We will write a custom essay sample on A Day at UNT or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Having a steering wheel of a jet-ski, it had the shape of a rowing boat. It wasnââ¬â¢t like any of the other ones, it had tremendous solar panels that fired the whole boat. I couldnââ¬â¢t resist myself so I had to ask, ââ¬Å"Can I touch it?â⬠He replied to me with a question, ââ¬Å"Would you like to turn it on?â⬠When my ears heard that, I almost fainted. Turning the key, I felt the power that the boat had, it even made me start breathing really hard. Soon after turning it off, he asked me if I would like to know more about the history of it, so I gladly nodded my head. The project started off with an old boat that had a huge hole in the middle. So I asked them why they didnââ¬â¢t just get a better boat instead. He had the most humble answer,â⬠You see, the thing is, we didnââ¬â¢t have enough money to buy a new one, every cent that was used in this project, was fundraised. We had to work hard for what we wanted.â⬠After that, I was speechless. As he went on, I had to ask him, ââ¬Å"So you guys started from scratch?â⬠I guess he didnââ¬â¢t know what to say because he didnââ¬â¢t answer. Iââ¬â¢m actually glad that he didnââ¬â¢t, if he was to answer, I donââ¬â¢t know what I would have said. As I looked around, I saw a photo album, it was called ââ¬Å"The Journey.â⬠It contained pictures of all their prototypes and all the struggles that the team had. It ran through my head, I have to show my brother. As I scavenged for him, asking people if I had seen him, I finally found him by a snack stand. We walked together to see the Jet-Boat. When we got there, he wasnââ¬â¢t as amazed as I was, but since he noticed I was really happy with it, he just went with it. Having the history of all their process reminded me of what engineering is. Anyone can have a problem, being an engineer is finding a solution to your problem. Even if it takes you 200 tries. Due to engineering, the world is where it is today. It is an everyday use, you use it from your car, to your cell phone, to even your chairs that you sit on, and thatââ¬â¢s what inspired me the most. Without engineering, the world would fall apart.
